Feng Shui Expertise

  •  Hello my name is  Rick Shibley I  have been studying Feng Shui for over 35 years. Starting as a casual student of Master Yun Huang in 1990 in Calgary Alberta. I have also taken formal instruction from the American Feng Shui Institute in California traditional Chinese methods such as the East West System using The Five Elements and 8 Trigrams, and the XuanKong Method based on a Number System. A lot of this is based on mathematics and requires careful study and understanding.
  • My approach to Feng Shui is to use predominantly these two Systems and to also dispel some of the myths about Feng Shui.
  • For instance the following are not part of Authentic Chinese Feng Shui.  Bagua Mirrors, Crystals,Coins, and the list goes on and on. Today there are a lot of misconceptions and  misinformation about Feng Shui as it has become fashionable to have a Feng Shui reading in the west. Unfortunately a lot of people practicing it don't know or understand the deeper theories. Many books have been written in the West about Feng Shui that are based on Asian superstition or a complete misunderstanding of how energy circulates. Mirrors reflect light or help you check your make-up but cannot redirect energy..
  • Feng Shui when practiced properly can set up your environment to aid in or solve Health ,Financial  Relationship and other issues helping all involved to attain a happy and healthier life.
  • I also do one on one or small group meditation instruction

The Whispering Winds and Flowing Waters: Unveiling the History of Traditional Feng Shui

Feng Shui, meaning "wind and water," is more than just an interior  design trend; it's an ancient art and science rooted in the deep  connection between humans and their environment. It's a philosophy that  guides us to arrange our living spaces in harmony with the natural  world, drawing upon the invisible energies that shape our experiences.  But where did this practice come from, and how did it evolve into the  complex system we know today? Let's delve into the fascinating history  of traditional Feng Shui.

Early Roots in Chinese Cosmology and Agriculture

The origins of Feng Shui are shrouded in the mists of prehistory,  with evidence suggesting its practice dates back at least 6,000 years.  Its roots lie in the observation of nature, the cycles of the seasons,  and the subtle energies that seemingly influenced the health and  prosperity of early Chinese communities.

  • Early Burial Practices: One of the earliest  applications of what would become Feng Shui was in the selection of  auspicious burial sites. These locations, often chosen based on their  topography, proximity to water sources, and protection from harsh  elements, were believed to ensure the well-being of the deceased and  their descendants.
  • Agricultural Harmony: As agricultural societies  developed, the understanding of land and water became crucial for  survival. The principles of Feng Shui began to influence the placement  of villages, the construction of irrigation systems, and the planning of  agricultural fields. The aim was to harness the beneficial energies of  the land and avoid areas that were deemed unfavorable.
  • The I Ching (Book of Changes): A significant  influence on the development of Feng Shui was the I Ching, an ancient  Chinese text that explores the dynamic interplay of Yin and Yang, and  the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). This philosophy  provided a framework for understanding the energetic flow in the  environment and how it interacted with human life.

Development Through Dynastic China

Feng Shui continued to evolve throughout the various dynasties of  China, becoming a highly refined and sophisticated practice. Here are  some key milestones:

  • The Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD): This period saw the  formalization of many Feng Shui principles, moving beyond simple  observation to incorporate more structured theories and calculations.  Compasses and specialized tools started to be used for more accurate  site analysis.
  • The Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD): The Song Dynasty  witnessed the rise of the compass school of Feng Shui (Luo Pan School),  which focused on the precise orientation of buildings using the magnetic  compass and complex calculations. This school is highly structured and  emphasizes mathematical precision.
  • The Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1912 AD): During  these periods, Feng Shui became widely practiced across all levels of  society, from imperial palaces to humble homes. The art of placing  residences in alignment with the flow of energy was considered crucial  for health, fortune, and success. The Form School of Feng Shui, which  emphasizes observations of the land's physical features, also gained  prominence. It considers the shapes of mountains, rivers, and other  structures to calculate energy flow.

The Transmission and Adaptation to Other Cultures

While rooted deeply in Chinese culture, Feng Shui's influence has extended beyond its borders.

  • Spread Throughout Asia: Over time, Feng Shui  principles spread to other parts of Asia, including Korea, Vietnam, and  Japan, where they adapted to local customs and traditions.
  • Modern Western Adaptation: In the late 20th and  early 21st centuries, Feng Shui gained popularity in the West, often  simplified and adapted for contemporary lifestyles. While many modern  interpretations focus on aesthetics and easy-to-apply remedies,  traditional Feng Shui practitioners emphasize the importance of a deeper  understanding of the underlying principles and the specific analysis of  each site.

Traditional Feng Shui Today

Traditional Feng Shui practitioners still adhere to the ancient  principles and techniques, often using a Luo Pan (Chinese compass) and  analyzing the land's forms and energy flow. They study the placement of  buildings, rooms, and furniture and strive to create environments that  support wellbeing and harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Key Takeaways

The history of traditional Feng Shui is a fascinating journey through  ancient wisdom, cosmological understanding, and a deep connection to  the natural world. It's a testament to humanity's enduring desire to  create environments that support health, happiness, and prosperity.  While modern adaptations may offer simplified tips, the roots of this  practice lie in the meticulous observation and analysis of energy  patterns that have been passed down through generations. Understanding  this history allows us to appreciate the complexity and depth of this  enduring art and science.

By acknowledging its rich past, we can approach Feng Shui with a  deeper respect for its traditions and its potential to create spaces  that truly nurture our lives.
